FS Academy instructional classes provide a fun and safe skating experience and promote physical fitness in a group atmosphere. Students are divided into groups based on figure skating level and experience. The FSA Instructional Classes are offered to the beginning figure skating as well as the advanced skater working on the axel and double jumps. The FSA Instructional classes are open to all figure skaters who meet the listed prerequisites for each class level. Classes are open to Learn to Skate USA, ISI and U.S. Figure Skating skaters. The Skating Director reserves the right to adjust a skater's class placement. Private instruction is necessary for skaters who participate in the FSA Instructional Classes, to accelerate progress and focus on individual skating needs.
FSAcademy On-Ice Instructional Classes:
On-Ice Classes Include:
- Figure Skating on-ice classes will follow the Learn to Skate USA Figure Skating curriculum appropriate for the beginning to advanced figure skater: Pre-Free Skate & Free Skate 1 - 6
- 30-minute instructional class and a freestyle practice session each week immediately preceding the class.
- Complimentary 10-minute stroking workshop for pre-registered skaters
- Skill focus: jumps, spins, footwork, style & "fun stuff"
- Discount available for multiple class registrations within the same series for the same skater
Each free skate level is comprised of a variety of progressive skating skills, transitions, spins and jumps — all of which build on the previous skill, providing
skaters a strong foundation of all elements. These levels will be taught in a positive and interactive group format. Instructors will focus on quality and mastery of skills. Private instruction is also required for all skaters participating in the on-ice instructional classes.

*Low Freestyle: No Pair Skating, Couples Ice Dancing, High Level Moves in the Field. High Freestyle Skaters are permitted, however, low skaters have the right of way.
Schedule and Fees
- Length of series and fees vary depending on seasonal schedule - please see class schedule for details.
No discount for not using freestyle practice session
- Practice freestyle sessions MAY NOT be made-up or credited for another freestyle session.
- Make-up classes are limited to ONE within a program series and must be completed BEFORE the end of the registered series. There are no refunds or credits if a student is unable to attend the make-up class
Walk-on fee $20 per class
Includes freestyle practice session, 10-minute stroking workshop and 30-minute instructional class.

FSAcademy Off-Ice Instructional Classes:
RMU Island Sports Center Staff will instruct skaters in off-ice training techniques to improve their on-ice performance by increasing strength, flexibility and endurance. Off-ice conditioning is essential for developing single, double and triple jump techniques and can enhance skaters’ potential through proper training and nutrition. Off-Ice Training Techniques can enhance skaters’ on-ice training and develop skating skills. Appropriate for skaters enrolled in Figure Skating Development, Junior Competitive and Competitive.
Appropriate for skaters 11 and older or approval from Skating Director or Conditioning Coach.

Conditioning classes will resume during the Summer FS Training Program.
Pro-Motion Off-Ice Jump Harness Training
The Pro-Motion Advantage System is designed for training skaters’ off-ice. It is best used to teach skaters rotation position and jumping technique, while they are wearing running shoes. Pro-Motion harness eliminates the focus of the on-ice set up and a potential fall while learning multiple rotation jumps and enables the skater to focus only on jumping and air position, which are essential for the successful completion of a jump on ice. Skaters learn to rotate doubles, triples and quads fast and on axis, with suspension training, without the worry of falling on-ice. Quickness is the essential skill required for these jumps and the Advantage System teaches that off-ice.
Please speak to your skating coach to discuss and schedule private lessons on the Pro-Motion Harness. Lesson fees will be paid directly to instructor for off-ice harness lessons. There is no additional payment to ISC for use of the Pro-Motion harness
Yoga for Figure Skaters - Currently Not Offered
Yoga for figure skaters is a powerful, energetic and fun opportunity for skaters to increase their awareness of their body through breath and movement with a significant emphasis on proper alignment to decrease the risk of injury. Additionally, this class offers an opportunity to build strength through mindful meditation and play and teaches skaters how to use proper breathing techniques to achieve calm and focus when practicing and/or competing.
Appropriate for skaters enrolled in Figure Skating Development, Junior Competitive and Competitive.
Specialty Classes, including yoga, will resume during the Summer FS Training Program.
Participants should bring his/her own yoga mat, towel, and yoga block/strap. Limited mats and blocks will be available to borrow. Inexpensive mats & block may be found at 5 Below, Marshalls & TJ Maxx
