“Tribute of Light Celebration” for the American Cancer Society

    Friday, November 17, 2017

During the months of October and November the American Cancer Society will be “selling” Tribute of Light Candles in memory or honor of someone who has been touched by cancer.  These (glow stick) candles will be carried onto the ice by area skaters who will surround the Plaza Christmas Tree during the official tree-lighting festivities.  In addition to the skaters on the ice, there will be additional walking volunteers surrounding The Rink holding candles, once again creating a beautiful scene for a great cause.

Volunteers: Skaters are needed to participate in the Candlelight Skate to carry a candle (glow stick) in memory or in honor of someone who has been touched by cancer. There is no obligation to purchase a candle or make a donation to participate in the Tribute of Light Celebration.  For school aged skaters – this is a great way to receive community service hours for a worthwhile cause.

PLEASE LIST SKATERS ONLY ON YOUR SIGN UP GENIUS REPLY.  DO NOT LIST NON-SKATER VOLUNTEERS.  PLEASE BE SURE TO LIST IF YOU HAVE MADE A DONATION TO ACS AND HAVE A MEMORY OR HONOR CARD WHICH YOU WILL BE SKATING WITH.

Skaters are invited to participate and must:

    • Bring their own skates
    • Be a proficient skater
    • 6 years of age or older

All volunteers will be taken on a first come, first served basis.

Attire:  Skaters should wear warm clothing, dressing in layers.  Pants may be any color, please avoid faded or torn jeans.  Gloves will be permitted, driving gloves or gloves with a gripping surface are recommended so that you may hold the candle without the risk of dropping it.  Festive holiday sweaters and colors are always appreciated!

Please Be Reminded: You will be standing outside for a period of time while the event is being set up and while you are skating.  If you are intimated by the cold unpredictable weather please do not volunteer.  We rely on the generosity of the skaters, who volunteer for this event, please do not sign-up if you are uncertain of your commitment and attendance for the event.

PARKING:  You can park anywhere in downtown Pittsburgh.  PPG Place’s parking garage is located on 3rd Avenue.  The rate is approximately $5 if you enter the garage AFTER 4 p.m.  (Note:  If you enter before 4 p.m., the daytime rate will apply to your entire parking time).  There is also a City lot next to PPG Place with access on both 3rd and 4th Avenues.
